Local Business Teams Up With Charitable Foundation to Assist NASCAR Fan

CONCORD, NC – June 6, 2014 – Benji Smith has led a life filled with challenges but from his continuous smile, positive attitude and dedication to his job of over 20 years you would never know it. This 37-year old avid NASCAR fan has endured physical and mental health problems since birth including a neurodevelopmental disorder called Microcephaly, Crohn’s disease, and open heart surgery in 2013.   As a resident of the Shamrock Group Home in Salisbury, Smith must keep all of his personal belongs in his small bedroom. This poses an extra challenge, since he has been collecting Special Olympic awards and sporting memorabilia since he was five. After numerous calls from group home staff regarding the cluttered room, Smith’s mother Debbie Martin contacted local organizing and move management company Chaos To Calm for help.

Lori Fike, owner of the Concord-based company and her team jumped at the opportunity to help. “When we first arrived it was difficult to walk through the room, every surface was crammed packed and the closet was barely functional because it was overflowing,” said Fike.

Over the course of several visits Lori and her team, including Myndi Llanio, Veronica Quinn and Brittany Baca, sorted Smith’s belongings and began installing systems to help make his room more functional, organized and aesthetically pleasing.

Baca shared Smith’s story with her finance Joey Logano, NASCAR driver #22. After hearing Benji’s story, Joey and The Joey Logano Foundation, whose mission is to inspire and assist those in need, stepped in and generously offered to purchase all of the items needed to get Benji’s room organized.

“Over the next few weeks Benji’s room truly went from chaos to calm,” said Smith’s mom Debbie Martin. “In 14 years he has never kept his room so clean and he loves it. Even the group home managers said they didn’t think his room had a floor.” Martin is deeply grateful to the Joey Logano Foundation and Chaos To Calm and said, “I truly feel God brought them into our life for a reason.”

On Wednesday, June 4, Smith and his family received an additional surprise when Brittany Baca and Joey Logano stopped by to visit Benji. Logano presented him a with car door and autographed it for him which the Chaos To Calm staff plans to hang it over his headboard. Logano also invited Smith to attend the October NASCAR race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway as a guest of the Joey Logano Foundation.

Following the visit from Logano and Baca, Smith’s mom asked the man of few words what he thought and he smiled and said, “Cool”.
